In 2019 some 65 million tourists traveled to Italy. That’s 1.1 tourists for every resident. There is no doubt it can get crowded in the major cities. Cities like Rome and Florence no longer experience a low season, but with twenty regions to explore, there is something for everyone, from the land where lemons grow to the City of Canals. Verdi said, ‘You can have the world if I can have Italy,’ Well, let’s show you why with our guide on where to stay in Italy this year.

Where to Stay in Italy: A Region-by-Region Guide
Fill a tall glass with ice. Take two Sicilian blood oranges and a bottle of Campari. Pour the Campari over the ice, and juice your oranges. Strain the juice and pour it over the Campari and ice and stir gently to mix. Add a garnish, preferably some orange peel, and Voilá! You have a Garibaldi—a cocktail symbol of Italian unification.
The color symbolizes the red shirts Garibaldi’s forces wore as they fought in Sicily for its unification with the newly founded Italy.
While Garibaldi was gathering oranges in the South, Gaspare Campari was in the North, perfecting the recipe for an aperitif that would bare his name, Campari. Mixed together, you blend North and South in a cocktail metaphor for the newly unified Kingdom of Italy.
If only navigating Italy was as simple as just putting two wonderful ingredients together. There are twenty regions of Italy, and in 2019 over fifty cities received at least 1 million tourists. Trying to navigate it solo is a minefield. So feel free to use this as a cocktail manual to understand what ingredients to mix together to make an unforgettable trip to Italy.
Pro Tip: Remember, our in-depth travel guides have already featured many of the regions we discuss here. So use this page as a jumping-off point. Explore it, pique your wanderlust, and remember, in the words of American author Bucchianeri “A man has not fully lived until he experiences that gentle balmy climate of ancient empires, the land of lemon trees and the genius of Michelangelo.”
How to use our maps: The maps on this page are fully interactive. Click on any region to find out a little about them and links to our blogs and hotel recommendations. Green represents Northern Italy, white represents Central Italy, and red for Sothern Italy, Sicily, and Sardegna.

A Guide to Northern Italy
The North of Italy is a cultural and gastronomical hub. The richness and quality of its food are matched only by the dazzlingly beautiful landscapes, multicultural cities, and world-class art museums.
Consisting of eight regions, Northern Italy has something for everyone. The Alps drop down into the great lakes of Garda and Como, making way for fertile wine lands and several fascinating cities.

Lake Como
Lake Como is a special place to behold and will take your breath away. It’s a welcome breath of fresh air and an outdoor lovers’ paradise. The natural surroundings, ambiance, and style of this part of Italy are a nice counterbalance to the historic cities and villages of Italy.
This is where Italy meets the Alps. It is a romantic area that is dotted with 19th-century villas and surrounded by majestic mountains. If you are there at the right time of year, you can be on the lake enjoying the sunshine while looking at the snow-capped Alps.

Vista Palazzo Lago di Como
€€€€+ | 5 Star | Rooftop Restaurant | Very Posh | Butlers
The recently renovated Vista Palazzo hotel is both grand and intimate. With only eighteen rooms, it has a boutique feel. The positioning of the hotel is right on Piazza Cavour facing the lake, so many of the rooms have stunning lake views. The hotel also has the only restaurant/bar terrace in Como. It’s located on the rooftop restaurant Sottovoce run by Chef Stefano Mattara. Don’t miss a chance for an aperitivo or dinner at this Michelin restaurant.
Grand Hotel Tremezzo
€€€€+ | 5 Star | Pools | Spa | Super Luxurious
The Grand Hotel Tremezzo was named the best hotel in Italy by Conde Nast. It has three pools, four restaurants and ninety rooms, an exquisite garden, and a beach, so there is plenty of space and privacy for their guests. The hotel is decorated in the belle époque style, and some of the suites have historic furniture. Their spa is world-class, and I recommend the heat treatment. Shoppers will lose their minds in their Sense of Lake boutique.

Ca’ Pisani Hotel
€€+ | 4 Star | Ideal Location | Art Deco | Great Staff
I love the location of this hotel: it’s literally steps away from San Marco yet it’s still quiet behind the Gallerie dell’Accademia. You’ll feel like you stepped back into the 1920s too, which is a fun vibe. Head to the rooftop for an evening sunset to remember.
Il Palazzo Experimental
€€+ | 4 Star | Romantic Views | Terrace | Restaurant and Bar
This hotel is in an original centuries-old palace, so every room will be a little different, but they’re all impeccably designed. The staff is attentive, the food is delicious, and the location on the canal is supreme. It’s definitely a quieter location away from the crowds too, which is nice.
Ca’ Maria Adele
€€€+ | 4 Star | Suites and Apartments | Ultra Luxe

All’Angelo Art Hotel
€€+ | 4 Star | Variety of Rooms | Private Dock | Breakfast
I like this hotel since it’s actually on the “far” side of St. Mark’s, which makes it a little quieter too. Plus they offer my favorite Venetian appetizer, cicchetti with wine, in their café. You might also like that they have a private dock if you’re using a water taxi.

Florence
Florence is the Renaissance capital and home to Accademia, Uffizi, Ponte Vecchio, the Pitti Palace, and much more. It is also a great starting point for day trips and overnight trips to smaller Tuscan towns and vineyards. We know this because we’ve experienced it, and now we will share it with you.
Florence, compared to cities like Rome, Paris, and Barcelona, has a smaller historical center. That alone makes planning much easier since you shouldn’t be too nervous about staying on the “wrong side of town.” As a rule of thumb, if you are within a 15-minute walking distance of Ponte Vecchio, you are in a good position.

The Isle of Ischia
If you are unfamiliar, Ischia is one of a few really cool islands off the coast of Naples. It is not as fancy as Capri, which is positive since it is very beautiful but much less expensive. Its best known for its thermal baths, which the Roman Emperors loved. In this article, we’ll explain where to stay in Ischia and which hotels are the best value.

Miramare e Castello
5 Star | €€ | Great Views | Great Pools | Beachfront
Probably the best setup in Ischia town if not the entire island. This 5-star hotel is right on the beach with a great pool and an amazing view.
Miramare Sea Resort & Spa
5 Star | €€€ | Super Luxurious | Many Pools
This is most definitely the most luxurious and romantic hotel on the Island. It is in a nice remote area but still lots to do nearby. Great views and really nice Mediterranean rooms.
Hotel Albatros
3 Star | € | Pool | 7 mins Beach | Family Friendly
Hotel Albatros is a reasonably priced hotel with a great pool in a good location. Close walking to a decent beach and great restaurants. It is on the west side of the island which makes it more remote.
Hotel San Lorenzo Thermal Spa
4 Star | €€ | Thermal Resort | Lots of Pools | 10 mins?♀️ Beach
If I am going to Ischia Hotel Term San Lorenzo is where I am going to stay. I like being a bit “remote” and this area has some cool features. Thermal pools, great views, and close by to some beautiful geographic features.

Atlantis Bay
$$$$+ | 5 Star | Pool | Sea View
Atlantis Bay Hotel is super contemporary and luxurious. The views are stunning, and the property makes you feel like a better person. My #1 choice for Taormina and maybe Sicily.
Una Hotels Capotaormina
$$$$+ | 5 Star | Pool | Sea View
Una Hotel is in a great location right on the peninsula of Taormina. Tons of space, a private beach, and lots of amenities.
Torre di Scopello
$$$$+ | Saracen Tower! | House Rental
Yes, you can stay in a renovated Saracen watch tower! This is more of a house rental than a hotel, but very experiential and has incredible views/location.
Baglio Oneto
$$$$ | 5-star | Pool | Castle
If I going Trapani, I am probably going to stay here. It’s beautiful, located in a castle, it has a great pool and breathtaking sea views. It’s a bit inland, so you can drive out and check out all the beaches and other areas-I love it.
Relais Antiche Saline
$ | 4-star | Incredible Views
In Italian, there is the word “Salvaggio,” which sort of means ‘a bit wild’. This 4-star accommodation is very comfortable amidst a natural and wild setting. If you want to disconnect, this is where you should do it.
