Are You Ready To Skip European Tourist Hotspots? More Travelers Think You Should

“Major tourist destinations maintain their powerful draw as they often deliver a reliable, high-impact travel experience that justifies their reputation,” says Brandon Shaw, COO and co-founder of The Tour Guy, a tour company specializing in curated small-group tours across major European destinations.

Rome’s Jubilee is expected to attract 32 million people. Here’s why — and how to avoid the crowds

Brandon Shaw, who lived and worked in Rome for 15 years and co-founded the guided travel company The Tour Guy in 2012, recommends that Jubilee visitors stay in Prati, a neighborhood near the Vatican, at Hotel Dei Mellini, Hotel Isa or Hotel NH Collection Roma Centro.

I Booked the Tour Guide From Hell — How Can I Escape?

Sean Finelli, CEO of The Tour Guy, also suggests keeping the guide’s feelings in perspective if you decide to exit a tour early. “I’d encourage travelers to remember that tour guides are just people at the end of the day. People who are extremely passionate about what they do.”

See What They’re Saying

Members of the media and our affiliate partners have a lot to say about our tours.

While visitors can book a ticket for a self-tour with an audio option directly from the palace, I enjoyed it much more with a private, guided tour with The Tour Guy. My guide could tell me much more than the audio guide could, and she knew which details of the palace to pay attention to (especially the Bridgerton ones).

The Travel

The park shows off Gaudí’s creative style, mixing nature with amazing architecture. Since 1984, it’s been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its unique design. I learnt all this because instead of just visiting to admire the mosaics, I took a tour booked through The Tour Guy.

“I hope you’re hungry,” my guide, Dimitri, says. We’re strolling through Rome’s Centro Storico, but in the opposite direction to the Colosseum and Pantheon. I’ve joined a food tour with The Tour Guy, searching for Rome’s best traditional food.

The Independent

We booked an Eiffel Tower Tour with Seine River Cruise with the Tour Guy. It’s so great to have a guide because I have found a lot of things in Paris are, well, confusing and aren’t often self-explanatory. If you really want to do a Seine cruise and go up the Eiffel Tower–and learn a good chunk about Paris–I highly recommend this tour.

Practical Wanderlust

What I do recommend, instead, are small or private tours that feature a particular experience, perhaps more off-the-beaten-path. If you are going to spend money on a private tour, do it for something you would not be able to do on your own. Here are 3 of my favorite non-mainstream tours in Rome hosted by The Tour Guy.

Frederica Bocco

TripSided

We’ve loved our tours with The Tour Guy, but not all tours are created equal. I recommend smaller group tours because they offer a more intimate experience and make it more likely that you’re having curated bites of food over tours that cater to a larger group.
