If you’ve ever booked a hotel in Las Vegas, you probably know the frustration of resort fees. You see a hotel room for a decent price, but when you go to book, you discover that the total rate is much higher once they add the resort fees! Luckily, not every hotel in Vegas uses resort fees. Read below for our favorite hotels without resort fees in Las Vegas.
The Top 10 Vegas Hotels Without Resort Fees
So, what is a resort fee, anyway? Also referred to as an amenity fee, resort fees are meant to cover the cost of the hotel’s extra amenities. (Granted, most hotels simply include amenities in their total price anyway.) Many hotels used to charge their guests a fee if they wanted to, say, use the gym or pool for one day.
A hotel guest only had to pay the additional gym fee if they used the gym. However, in the interest of making a few extra bucks, hotels began to charge every guest a “resort fee.” Whether a guest used the amenity or not, the resort fee was added to every guests’ bill.
So, where did resort fees come from? There are a few reasons why these unwanted extra charges have become popular. One reason is that people started booking hotels online instead of calling a hotel directly to make a reservation. Those third-party sites like Expedia or—cough—Booking.com charge a small fee for hosting the hotel on their site, so the hotels accrue it back by charging their guests.
Another reason why resort fees became so popular for hotels is that hotels could advertise a lower rate to encourage bookings, particularly during the recession in the early 2000s. And contrary to popular belief, Las Vegas wasn’t the first city to start this—they’re just the most notorious since almost every hotel has resort fees here. Although resort fees may not be legal in all U.S. states, it’s tricky to get out of paying them.
It sure is demoralizing when you book a room that’s $26 a night, only to see that the nightly resort fee is $39 or more. That’s why you might be better off picking a Vegas hotel that doesn’t have resort fees!
Of course, there’s a catch. All of the iconic Las Vegas hotels on the Strip charge resort fees. However, we know of some great Vegas hotels without resort fees that are pretty close to the Strip (and even one that is right on it). We also have some off-Strip favorites for a calmer stay—plus you’ll find a lot more options with fridges and microwaves off Strip!
