Are you the type of person that just loves when people come and visit you so you can show them around? Maybe you even work as a tour guide or double as a foodie at night? If that is the case, we want you to come to write for us!
Before applying, here are some FAQs you should look into:
- What is The Tour Guy all about?
- What are the qualifications? Do I need writing experience?
- Where do I get the information?
- Would I be a travel writer?
- Do I get paid?
- Can this lead to other opportunities with The Tour Guy?
- How do I apply?
What is The Tour Guy all about?
Here is a five-step process that explains what we are all about!
- We are a tour operator that is also good at selling things on the internet.
- We want to expand globally without sacrificing high-quality and local activities.
- To do that, we partner with local experts (that’s you) & local tour operators in each city that can bring knowledge to our platform.
- Our “business” is selling tours, but we are creating an online guidebook that is free and recommends the best of each city!
- Unlike guide books, we don’t hire travel writers. We hire a local expert in each city. Doesn’t that make more sense?
Am I Qualified?
Here is what you need:
- Experience writing content on the internet
- We’ll look at your content and not who you wrote it for. Amateurs are welcome!
- Basic formatting knowledge
- What is a header? Can you crop images without distorting them?
- At least 1 year in your city
- More is better.
- An obsession with your local food, culture, and history
- If you live in Rome and have never been in the Colosseum or NYC and have not visited the MET, its best not to apply.
- Disciplined enough to not use the internet
- The web has deeply corrupted history and cannot be used when writing for us.
- Worked as a tour guide? You may be perfect!
- Have a PHD in history, art, or classics? Are you a published historian? You are perfect!
- Understanding “readability” is very important and a big barrier to entry.
If I am brought onto the team, where can I source information?
We are on a mission to create the most credible and authentic travel and history content to ever exist. For this reason, we do not source history, facts, or content from the general internet.
In our circle of freedom writers, you won’t even be allowed to do an internet search for your topic. Why? If you read someone else’s work you’ll fall into their narrative and your content will be destined to fail and, most importantly, it won’t be original nor authentic.
We hire local experts and we want your recommendations, not someone else’s. This is why writers source information from their own personal experiences, recommendations from friends, and books.
Would I be a travel writer?
No, you’d be a local expert. Travel writers teach people to travel. We teach people how to explore each destination individually. Both are helpful to travelers, but we believe only local experts should offer advice about individual destinations.
Do I get paid?
Yes, you do. Local experts are paid as independent contractors and can submit an invoice once per month to get paid by bank transfer.
Can this lead to other opportunities with The Tour Guy?
Yes! We have local experts who are promoted to editor eventually. Also, Tour Ops will often ask local experts if they are willing to lead tours based on local regulations or generally help customers for compensation. There is also an opportunity to assist in product creation, photography, or even video content on our Youtube Channel!
