Itinerary

Semi-Private Rome Combo: Vatican, Sistine Chapel, Colosseum & Walking Tour

A curated day of Rome's icons with timed-entry tickets, a storytelling guide, and a premium transfer

Your tour begins outside the Vatican walls

Meet your semi private group outside Caffé Vaticano, where your guide is waiting with a sign. After brief introductions and a quick overview of the day ahead, you’ll head straight to the Vatican Museums entrance.

Head inside the Vatican Museums with timed-entry tickets

With pre-reserved group access, bypass the long general admissions lines and walk straight into one of the world's largest art collections. Your guide leads you through the Candelabra Gallery, Tapestries, and the Gallery of Maps.

Stand beneath Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel

Before stepping inside, your guide shares fascinating insight into the frescoes so you know exactly what to look for in the silent chapel. Then you enter, gazing up at The Creation of Adam and The Last Judgment in reverent awe.

Transfer to Rome's historic center

After exiting the Vatican Museums through the special Scala Regia, pause to admire Saint Peter's Basilica. Then, board a private, air-conditioned vehicle reserved for your semi private group. Sit back for the short ride from the Vatican into the heart of ancient Rome.

Stroll past Piazza Navona, Pantheon, and Trevi Fountain (3.2 km / 2 miles)

Step out into Rome's cobblestoned center for a guided walk through Piazza Navona, home to Bernini's fountains. Pause at the Pantheon's exterior to hear how its 2,000-year-old dome stunned ancient engineers. Then, continue to the Baroque Trevi Fountain to admire it from afar.

Break for lunch near the Trevi Fountain

After a morning of awe, take a break for a well-deserved lunch. You’ll have free time to find a local eatery near the Trevi Fountain to recharge and sample some of the city’s delicious cuisine before continuing your journey into ancient Rome.

Walk through the Roman Forum

Reunite with your guide and semi private group at the Forum entrance, then trace the marble paths where senators once debated. Hear stories of the Arch of Titus, Temple of Saturn, and the rise of the Caesars.

Enter the Colosseum's ancient tiers

Next, group access whisks you past the long general admissions queues, letting you head inside the Colosseum without delay. Follow your guide with your semi private group up to the 1st and 2nd tiers, painting scenes of gladiator combat and roaring crowds.

Your tour ends outside the Colosseum

After two tiers of gladiator history, your day concludes just outside the Colosseum's stone walls. Your guide bids farewell, leaving you free to grab a coffee, snap photos, or hop on the nearby metro to your accommodation.

Important Details

Discover what to expect, what's included, and everything you need to know before booking.

Good to know:

  • Dress Code: As the Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel are deeply religious sites, everyone must cover their knees and shoulders. Guests who do not meet the dress code may be refused entry by security officials. No hats or flip flops please.

  • Accessibility: Due to the historic layout of the Vatican and Colosseum, this tour isn’t suitable for wheelchairs. If you have questions or concerns or expect to need elevator access at the Colosseum, please contact us in advance. You may also like to consider joining our Private Rome in a Day tour.

  • ID Requirement: A valid government-issued ID is required for entry into the Colosseum and Vatican. The name on your tickets (entered at check-out) must match the name listed on your government-issued ID or you may be refused entry.

  • Bag Policy: For quicker entry, please leave large backpacks and camera tripods at your accommodation as they aren’t permitted inside the Vatican Museums or Colosseum.

  • Lines: This tour includes group access to the Vatican Museums and Colosseum. While you'll bypass the long general admissions line for independent visitors, there may still be a wait to get through security.

  • Please Note: The Sistine Chapel is a place of worship, so silence is required inside. Your guide will share everything you need to know before you enter.

  • Fitness: This is a walking tour covering about 3.2 km (2 miles) on cobblestones and uneven ancient stone.

  • Tour Changes: Depending on entry times, the order of the itinerary may be adjusted. Either way, you’ll enjoy the full experience with your guide.

  • Children: All visitors, regardless of age, need a ticket for the Colosseum. Each child’s ticket must match their government-issued ID. Passports are recommended.

  • Disability certification: Visitors with valid disability certification are eligible for a reduced €2 entry ticket to the Colosseum, which also applies to one companion. Contact us after booking to arrange this. This applies to the ticket cost only, not the tour price.

  • Check-in: Please arrive 15 minutes early so your group can enter right on time and make the most of your visit.

Our guide Maria was great! I loved the provided earbud so we could hear her even in the very crowded areas. She was very knowledgeable and provided lots of info to help bring what we were seeing to life. I don't think there is any way we would have been able to see as much as we did on our own.

Erturk was PHENOMENAL! He was so knowledgeable, courteous and passionate about the information he shares throughout the day. He was concerned for our safety, his pace, he checked in on us throughout the day and made sure we were comfortable. Erturk spoke with knowledge, facts and had a gentle and calm approach to his tour. We felt as if our money couldn’t have been better spent anywhere else. Kind, courteous, professional, passionate. Simply amazing.

Great!

FAQs

Where to meet?

You'll meet your guide at Viale Vaticano, 100, 00192, Roma, RM, near the entrance to the Vatican Museums. Look for the exact location on your booking voucher. Your tour will end near the Colosseum.

Is this tour family-friendly?

Yes, this is a great fit for families. The small group keeps the pace personal, and your guide tailors stories to keep kids and adults engaged.

Is this tour accessible for guests with mobility needs?

This tour is not wheelchair accessible. The day involves about 3.2 km (2 miles) of walking on cobblestones, multiple staircases inside the Vatican Museums, and uneven ground at the Roman Forum and Colosseum. If you have concerns or questions, please reach out in advance.

What should I wear?

We ask both men and women to cover knees and shoulders, otherwise the Vatican might refuse entry to religious sites and you’ll miss out on a portion of your tour. We understand the summers in Rome can be hot, so a great alternative is to bring a shawl/scarf/sweater with you. That way you can cover your knees and shoulders when necessary.

Is lunch included?

Lunch is not included. You'll have free time near the Trevi Fountain to grab pasta, pizza al taglio, or gelato at a local spot, and your guide can point out favorites nearby.

Do we go inside St. Peter's Basilica?

No, this tour does not include entry to St. Peter's Basilica due to the timing of the tour. Your guide will still offer an explanation and let you know how you can visit on your own. Entrance to the Basilica is free! Please note that on Wednesdays and during special events this tour does not include a view of the outside of St. Peter's Basilica, due to the closure of the Scala Regia.

How does timed-entry access work?

Your tour holds reserved timed-entry tickets for the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and Colosseum, so you bypass the long ticket-purchase queues. You’ll still pass through standard security screening, which can take a few minutes.

How comprehensive are the Colosseum and Vatican sections of this tour?

In the spirit of seeing as much of Rome as possible, the Colosseum and Vatican sections of this tour are a little shorter than some tours. But don't worry, you'll see all the most important things at each location!

How much walking should I expect on this tour?

This is a physically active tour, and you'll be on your feet for a large portion of the day. Expect to walk through the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, in addition to the 3.2 km (2 miles) guided historic center walk.

Does this tour go to the Arena Floor?

No, on this tour, you'll visit the first and second floors of the Colosseum. However, you can book a Colosseum Arena Floor tour if you want to experience that opportunity!

Do tours always follow this exact itinerary?

Not necessarily. Guided tours of major attractions are dependent on ticket assignments. Most of our Rome in a Day Tours start at the Vatican, but it's possible your tour may run in reverse. You might also enter the Colosseum before the Roman Forum and end your tour in the forum.
