Hike to the crater of Mt. Vesuvius
After lunch, follow your volcanologist guide on a short but moderately steep hike up Mt. Vesuvius. The 1 km (0.6-mile) trail climbs about 140 m (460 ft) over loose volcanic gravel and switchbacks, taking around 20–30 minutes to reach the crater rim. Take in the views as you learn about the volcanic forces that shaped the region.
Your tour finishes in central Rome
Relax on the return drive as the sun sets over the Italian countryside. Arrive back at the original meeting point in Rome, feeling inspired by a day well spent between ancient history and natural environmental power.

Good to know:
Dress Code: Comfortable attire and sturdy walking shoes are essential for exploring the ruins and hiking the volcano. Bring layers, as temperatures can vary between Rome, Pompeii, and the summit.
Accessibility: This tour involves ancient ground and uneven terrain. It is unfortunately not wheelchair or stroller accessible. A soft baby carrier is recommended.
ID Requirement: Please bring a valid government-issued ID for entrance into Pompeii. The name on your tickets must match the name listed on your government-issued ID or you will be refused entry.
Difficulty of Hike: Short but moderately steep. The climb to the crater is about 1 km (0.6 miles) with roughly 140 m (460 ft) of elevation gain, and takes most people 20 to 30 minutes uphill. The trail is wide with switchbacks, but the surface is loose volcanic gravel underfoot.
Lunch: This tour includes a traditional Neapolitan lunch at Ristorante Kona. You may choose from three menus featuring classic pizza, local appetizers, and tiramisu.
Dietary Restrictions: Please contact us in advance with any special dietary restrictions or allergies, so we can do our best to accommodate you during the lunch stop.
Bag Policy: Only small bags (30x30x15 cm max) are allowed inside the Pompeii ruins, so please leave large backpacks or luggage at your accommodation.
Weather Advisory: In rare cases of inclement weather or strikes, the crater of Mt. Vesuvius may be closed to visitors. If this occurs, we will notify you as soon as possible.
Non-Refundable Tickets: Tickets for Vesuvius' crater are non-refundable and are tied to your name. Unfortunately, we cannot offer a refund should you not be able to join.

This tour was fantastic! The transportation was smooth, safe, and comfortable, and we had a great driver. The tour guides and drivers were very friendly and knowledgeable. The overall itinerary was great and well organized. The lunch was good and they were super accommodating with dietary restrictions. We especially loved the Vesuvius crater portion. We would highly recommend tours with this company!!

We had an excellent day trip with The Tour Guy to Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius. It was just the 2 of us and 3 other guests, plus the guide Giuliano and driver Marco. We really lucked out that it was such a small group. We essentially got a semi-private trip. In the morning on the way to Pompeii we stopped at a rest stop to use the restroom and get breakfast and then we were off. Our first stop was Pompeii where we met a local guide who took the five of us throughout the Pompeii ruins and gave us a history lesson. He was good, he had a very dry sense of humor but he got better as the tour went on. There was a lot of people everywhere so we had to keep up so the group didn’t get separated. I wish we had maybe a little bit more down time to go look around on our own to take more pictures. We only got 5 minutes at the end so that wasn’t enough time as the excavated city is quite big. But nevertheless it was an amazing experience. Afterwards, Giuliano and Marco took us to Kona restaurant just under Vesuvius for lunch. So we had a nice view of the volcano. It was really good, they even had a Gluten Free pasta option for me since I couldn’t have pizza. We had just enough time to eat and relax to not feel rushed. Afterwards we took the car up the volcano as high as it was possible. There we met another local guide who took us up the volcano all the way to the crater. This guide was really good and funny too. He gave us enough time to do the climb. It was pretty steep so we took couple of breaks but it took maybe about 30 minutes. Up at the top it is flat so everyone can walk around the crater, take pictures and explore. The guide gave us ample time to explore and take pictures, as well as he gave us a great local history lesson regarding the eruption and Pompeii. It was amazing and one of the highlights of our trip to Italy. And we really lucked out with the weather and had a great visibility of the crater. I did this tour 10 years ago with a different tour group and that day it rained so we couldn’t see anything inside the crater due to rain and steam. So this was amazing chance for me to finally see it. Then it was time to head back to Rome. We stopped at the same rest stop for a break and then we were back in the city by 7pm. All in all an excellent day trip and well worth the money and time and a must when visiting Rome. And The Tour Guy’s pricing was very competitive and cheaper than the other company that I used 10 years ago. Can’t beat that for a small 5 people day trip like this.

Comfortable, modern tour bus to get around. Giuliano was great at answering questions and pointing out interesting sights along the drive. Drivers did a great job handling traffic in Naples which caused a bit of a delay, shortening our time at Pompeii. The tour guide at Pompeii was very knowledgeable and showed us many interesting areas in the slightly reduced time available. You could easily spend a full day or more exploring the area fully. Lunch halfway up Mt. Vesuvius was a surprisingly large amount of food including appetizers, a big pizza for each guest, and a drink of your choice. Our geologist guide Diego took us on the hike up the volcano and was full of knowledge, explaining the landscape and ongoing volcanic activity. The break taken halfway through each leg of the bus ride was a welcome washroom stop despite being a tourist trap with refreshments that were good but severely overpriced. In totality, a great tour with no regrets for a family traveling with 3 kids.

The 3 hour drive from from to Pompeii was not bad. We stopped halfway for bathroom, coffee, snacks. Pompeii was amazing and much bigger than I expected. Then we went for lunch on the way up Mt Vesuvius. Lunch was great and very filling (3 courses). Then we hiked up visuvius which was not a bad hike at all. Gravel path that took about 30 min to scale to the rim. All the way up the mountain, you had amazing views of Napoli and the Mediterranean Sea. Overall great experience and would highly recommend.

We had a really fun time on this trip. Our tour leader had a lot to say about the areas we were driving through on our way to Pompeii, it was a great history lesson. Our guide through Pompeii was really knowledgeable and funny, and the guide up Vesuvius was really patient as we made our way, well-timed breaks and had lots to say about the whole area. Highly recommend this day trip!

My husband and I and our 3 teens loved this day trip! The bus ride was smooth and enjoyable, lunch was delicious, and both the tour of Pompeii and the hike to Mt. Vesuvius were phenomenal! Our guides were fun, knowledgeable, and an overall joy to spend the day with. The whole trip was stress-free because everything was well planned out and organized. I would highly recommend this tour! It was a once in a lifetime experience!

Excellent tour guide and driver, Anna and Romelli ( I hope I have his name correct). Pompeii guide also excellent . Pompeii visit was great. It is a shame it isnt longer, but I fully understand why. The lunch is the best I have ever had on any tour, anywhere in the world. I am 72 and well travelled. Mount Vesuvius was really fun to. We enjoyed the walk to the top

This was a wonderful tour!! I highly recommend. Sasha at Pompeii kept us smiling. Lunch was in a beautiful setting. The pace up Mt Vesuvius was a bit too fast. I suggest going up and down a bit slower for safety. Please add to your itinerary the breaks between Rome and Pompeii for restroom/snack break — these were wonderful and knowing ahead would help others plan food/restroom/etc. Also, thank you for not cancelling the tour even though we were a small group of only 9.

Had a fantastic time! Our tour guide was knowledgeable and truly passionate! The ride down to Pompeii was full of wonderful facts and sight seeing as we left Rome and drove through Italy. I would recommend. The place we stopped at for lunch had an amazing view, however if you have a gluten allergy bring your own lunch.

My husband and I really enjoyed our guide, Marius, during our trip to Pompeii and Vesuvius. He was well versed on this amazing site and also gave us great ideas for other excursions while in Rome. We went to Museo della Mura today and it might’ve been the highlight of our visit to Rome. We love to walk so we set out from our hotel in Trastevere and walked from here to Museo della Mura and enjoyed the Circus maximus along the way. Marius spoke lovingly of his wife who is also a tour guide, which we found very sweet and thoughtful. He is a valuable member of your team who should be respected for his excellent work ethic and wisdom!!
