Step inside the Basilica di Santa Maria
Head inside one of Rome's oldest places of worship, originally founded in the fourth century. Your guide highlights the golden interior mosaics and dramatic arches that reflect centuries of religious architecture, offering a peaceful pause inside this magnificent neighborhood sanctuary.
Descend into the San Crisogono crypt
Next, go off the beaten path to visit the Basilica di San Crisogono and uncover an underground archaeological site beneath the modern church floor. Walking down into the ancient crypt reveals the remains of an early Christian basilica and Roman houses featuring faded centuries-old frescoes.
Discover a medieval synagogue facade
Winding through quieter cobblestone side streets, pause before the subtle remains of a medieval Jewish synagogue. Your guide shares how Rome's Jewish community has lived in the city for over two thousand years, surviving shifting empires and dramatic historical changes.
Stroll across historic Tiber Island
Then, walk across the Tiber River via Ponte Fabricio, the oldest functional bridge in Rome. Crossing this scenic islet gives you panoramic views of the river currents and the broken arches of ancient Roman bridges resting in the water nearby.

Arriving on the other side, enter the Jewish Ghetto through Piazza 16 October 1943, dedicated to a tragic day in history for the Roman-Jewish culture. Walk past kosher bakeries, tranquil fountains like the Turtle Fountain, and vibrant local storefronts while learning about the complex history of the area.
Admire the Portico d’Ottavia and ancient ruins
Your guide leads you past the impressive Portico d’Ottavia, an ancient structure that once served as a busy Roman fish market. Nearby, you will view the massive Teatro di Marcellus, an ancient open-air theater that closely resembles the Colosseum.
Your tour ends near the Great Synagogue
Your tour finishes outside the Great Jewish Synagogue, one of the largest houses of worship in Europe. After visiting a historic local bakery to sample traditional sweet Jewish pizza, your guide will provide lunch recommendations and inside tips for your remaining time in Rome.
