Guide tips

Itinerary

Your tour begins near the Vatican Museums entrance

Meet your guide near the entrance of the Vatican Museums. The exact location will be listed on your booking voucher. .

Skip the line

Avoid long queues with our skip the line tickets!

Enter the Vatican Museums

With your privileged entry, you'll glide past the main crowds and head inside to begin exploring the Vatican's magnificent art collection. Please note that all guests to the Vatican need to pass through security, so expect some standing in line.

Pause in the Pinecone Courtyard

Next, step into the Pinecone Courtyard, an open-air space tucked inside the museums. Take in the massive bronze pinecone and the calm, geometric layout before you move back into the galleries.

Admire classical masterpieces in the Pio-Clementino Museum

Then, explore the halls filled with some of the world’s most important classical sculptures. You’ll stop to admire masterpieces like the dramatic Laocoön and His Sons and the serene Apollo Belvedere, learning about the myths and legends associated with these iconic works.

Stroll through the Gallery of Maps

Follow your guide into the astonishing 120-meter (400 ft) long Gallery of Maps. This iconic hall reveals Italy’s intricate terrain through the meticulous cartography of the 16th century, commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII. You’ll hear the stories behind these detailed, topographical depictions of the Italian peninsula.

Continue into the Gallery of Tapestries

Marvel at richly woven scenes created by Raphael’s students. These monumental tapestries tell biblical stories with color, movement, and fascinating artistic tricks your guide helps you spot.

Discover hidden symbolism in the Raphael’s Rooms

After that, you’ll enter the suite of rooms decorated by the Renaissance master Raphael. These chambers reveal the height of Renaissance art and wisdom, containing famous frescoes such as The School of Athens, which celebrates philosophy and human intellect.

Enter the Sistine Chapel and behold Michelangelo's mind blowing ceiling

Finally, the moment arrives to gaze up at Michelangelo’s awe-inspiring ceiling in the Sistine Chapel. Take in his magnificently portrayed biblical stories, from the Creation of Man to The Last Judgment. Remember that this is a silent visit, as the chapel is a place of worship.

Take a special passageway to Saint Peter's Basilica

Follow your guide through a special staircase connecting the Vatican Museums directly to Saint Peter’s Basilica. This exclusive passage lets you skip the long walk around the museums and enter the basilica without retracing your steps.

Your tour finishes at St. Peter’s Basilica

Last but not least, enter the breathtaking St. Peter’s Basilica. Discover Michelangelo’s Pietà, stand beneath Bernini’s monumental Baldachin, and soak in centuries of spiritual grandeur. You are free to remain inside the Basilica for as long as you wish before exiting back into Rome.

What reviewers sayPowered by Cicero AIBETA

Reviewers frequently praise the guides for their extensive knowledge, engaging storytelling, and ability to navigate large crowds effectively, enhancing the overall Vatican experience. Many also note the benefit of expedited entry, which helps avoid long lines, though some mention the tours can be physically demanding due to walking and heat, and the crowded conditions sometimes limit the experience.

Serena was nice and well informed. The tour is very overwhelming with so many people. Really hard to enjoy and see things with so many people. And we weren’t even there during peak travel season. We just felt like cattle moving along the way. This isn’t Serena’s fault. I wish we had picked a different day and time.

Great info while keeping it moving!

There’s so much to see, and you could easily spend 8 hours slowly moving through all the exhibits and info. Our tour guide kept things moving. Giving the perfect balance of having enough detail while not moving at a snails pace. Also loved how he went over great things to look for in the Sistine chapel BEFORE going in so you could truly appreciate it!

We had a fantastic experience with our tour guide, Roberta. She was incredibly knowledgeable, passionate and engaging, bringing the history and art of the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Square and St. Peter’s Basilica to life. As an art historian, she provided fascinating insights and wonderful details without ever making the tour feel overwhelming. She also had a great sense of humour, which added a fun and personal touch to the entire experience. Her ability to balance history, art and humour made the tour both educational and thoroughly enjoyable. You could tell she genuinely loved what she does, and her enthusiasm was contagious. We highly recommend her to anyone visiting the Vatican. She truly made our experience memorable!

Francisco was a good guide sometimes a little hard to understand. Though his English is way better than my Italian 😀. Very crowded, but not the tours fault. Vistime chapel surprisingly not that impressive. St Peters, unguided portion, was incredible.

This experience was 5 stars from start to finish. Meeting place was easy to find. Entrance line was a breeze. The guide Maria was incredible. Her knowledge is unsurpassed and she kept it very interesting with side stories and a few great jokes put in throughout her tour. Also kept the group together and on point when some of the younger ones started to stray. Highly recommend The Tour Guy!

We did the Vatican tour this morning with Maria as our guide. She was excellent. A wealth of knowledge about the Vatican and the associated history. Maria also had a good sense of humor as shown in some of her explanations and comments about the throngs of people we were sharing the Vatican with.

FAQs

Is there a way to see the Vatican without a guided tour?

Yes, it's possible, though the information and guidance you get with a tour is certainly worth considering. If you'd rather explore independently then you can click here for skip the line Vatican tickets.

What if I have concerns about my mobility on this tour?

If you have any concerns about your mobility, we suggest taking a Vatican Private Tour so your needs can be better accommodated.

Does the Vatican ever experience unexpected closures?

During state visits or special religious events, parts of the Vatican may be closed unexpectedly and without much notice. If an area normally visited during a tour is suddenly closed, our guide will still provide explanations of the closed areas from outside. They will even show you another gallery to compensate for the lost time in the usual location.

Will the Vatican Museums be crowded during this tour?

There is a chance the museums may be crowded while we are inside, please stay close to your expert guide as they are professionals in successfully navigating the Vatican crowds.

Is there a dress code?

As the Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel are deeply religious sites, everyone must cover their knees and shoulders. Guests who do not meet the dress code may be refused entry by security officials. No hats or flip flops please. We understand the summers in Rome can be hot, so a great alternative is to bring a shawl/scarf/sweater with you. That way you can cover your knees and shoulders when necessary.

Where to meet?

Meet your guide near the entrance to the Vatican Museums. The exact meeting point can be found in the voucher you'll receive after your booking. The tour ends inside St. Peter’s Basilica.

Does this tour include entrance to St. Peter's Basilica?

Please note that the Basilica is closed on Wednesday mornings due to the Papal Audience and will not be included in tours. Afternoon tours on Wednesdays will still include St. Peter's Basilica entry. Any tour beginning after 3:30pm on any day is not guaranteed to include St. Peter's Basilica entry. Please note that the Vatican Museums can close St. Peter's Basilica at any time without notice for special events, holidays, or government visits.

Can I stay inside St. Peter’s Basilica after the tour ends?

Absolutely. Once your guide has led you inside, you're free to explore the basilica at your own pace. Stay as long as you like before stepping out into St. Peter’s Square.

Does this tour skip-the-line?

Timed entry tickets help you bypass the long independent visitors lines at the Vatican Museums, but, for everyone's safety, no tour company can skip Vatican security. Everyone must pass through the same security screening, so there may still be a brief wait before entry, depending on crowds.
