Itinerary

Your tour begins near the Acropolis

Gather with your guide on Athanasiou Diakou Street, minutes from the Acropolis, and slip on your headset. Feel the city stir before the group heads for the south slope to begin the tour.

Begin at the birthplace of Greek drama

Wander into the Theatre of Dionysus, where tragedy was born, and pass the general admissions lines as you enter with pre-reserved tickets. Below the citadel looms the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a Roman stage still alive to this day with summer concerts.

Ascend the marble gateway to the sacred rock

Climb the worn marble ramp through the Propylaea, the monumental gateway that serves as the entrance to the Acropolis. Sense the shift as the city noise drops away. Perched above, see the compact Temple of Athena Nike that once celebrated victory during the Peloponnesian War.

Marvel at the Parthenon and the Caryatids

Emerge onto the summit and take in the Parthenon, raised on 46 fluted columns in the 5th century BC for Athena. Opposite it, the Erechtheion, an ancient Greek temple, rests on six carved maidens who have held that porch for 2,400 years.

Linger over Athens from the summit

Then take 30 minutes of free time to find the best angles on the Parthenon or simply watch Athens below. Lycabettus Hill and the Aegean shimmer on the horizon.

Lose yourself in the lanes of Anafiotika

After free time, drift downhill into the Plaka neighborhood, then slip into Anafiotika, a pocket of white Cycladic houses built by island masons in the 1800s. Painted shutters, bougainvillea, and hushed courtyards line every narrow alley.

Uncover the layers of Ottoman and Roman Athens

Pause at the Bathhouse of the Winds, the only Ottoman-era public bath left standing in the city. Then follow the Roman Forum past the octagonal Tower of the Winds, the Fethiye Mosque, and Hadrian's Library.

Your tour ends at Monastiraki Square

Lastly, spill out into Monastiraki, one of the oldest squares in Athens, where the flea market hums all day. Tavernas and cafes wait a few steps away for a convenient spot for a meal after the tour.
