Visit Rome’s underground burial sites after they’re closed to the public

- Capuchin Crypt After Hours
- Private Luxury Transportation
- VIP Access to Priscilla Catacombs
This after-hours visit to the Capuchin Crypts and Rome Catacombs will give you an insightful overview of the burial methods of ancient Rome. Uncover the skeletal remains of more than 3,700 bodies and witness some of the catacombs’ most ancient frescoes. This 2.5-hour tour includes:
- Friendly English-speaking guide
- Maximum group size of 20 people
- Guided tours of Capuchin Crypts and Priscilla Catacombs
- Luxury transportation between attractions
Please note: Because some of the sites on this small group tour are religious, knees and shoulders must be covered for both men and women at all times. We know that Rome gets quite hot during the summertime - it's always a great idea to bring a shawl/scarf/sweater with you to cover your knees and shoulders when necessary.
From the outside, it just looks like a church. But on the inside, discover something entirely different. You’ll descend the steps of the Santa Maria della Concezione church to discover five chapels, each dedicated to a different area of the body. You may think that the bones and skeletal remains you’ll find are organized in a macabre art form; however, this was not at all the intention.
As you explore the Crypt of the Resurrection, Crypt of the Skulls, Crypt of the Pelvises, Crypt of the Leg Bones and Thigh Bones and Crypt of the Three Skeletons, your guide will explain the purpose of the Crypts. Symbolizing mortality and passage of life through the Earth, the Crypts will set the stage for your next experience: the site of ancient Roman burials.
Transportation to Priscilla Catacombs
Once you’ve learned all about the lives of Capuchin friars and their skeleton remains, it’s time to head to your next destination. Not to worry, we have all the logistics planned for you, so that you don’t have to worry about a thing. Board our luxury coach with your guide and soon arrive at one of Rome’s most ancient roads, the Appian Way.
Burial practices in ancient Rome were one of the most controversial topics of that time period. Christianity was a new religion at the time, with a fundamental belief that your spirit ascended to heaven after death. While the city did not allow burials within the city limits and most people, Pagans, were cremated after death, the Christians needed a new solution.
They decided to build a system of underground tunnels where they could bury their dead in a legally and religiously sound manner. On this after-hours visit, you’ll see what are often known as the “Queen of Catacombs,” which stretch for over five miles.
After entering the almost entirely empty Catacombs, your guide will provide insight on the biblical art inside. Most famously, you’ll see early inscriptions such as Moses striking water from a rock, the Madonna and Child and the Sacrifice of Isaac.

Creepy but cool
Capuchin crypt was really interesting to see all of the bones. A fun Halloween activity for my family! Organized company and great guide.
Perfect evening activity
All of the other tours we booked with this company were during the day and this was a great thing to do at night. Really cool to venture outside of Rome and see the Catacombs in the dark. Great guide! My sister is coming to Rome in a few months and she just signed up for this tour too!
Frequently Asked Questions
Where to meet?
Piazza Barberini - in front of the Fontana del Tritone. A representative will be there holding a sign with our company name on it.
What to bring?
Wear comfortable shoes. In summer, bring sunscreen. In spring and autumn, bring a light jacket.
Q: Is there a dress code to enter the religious sites on this tour?
A: We ask both men and women to cover knees and shoulders, otherwise you may be refused entry to religious sites and miss out on a portion of your tour. We understand the summers in Rome can be hot, so a great alternative is to bring a shawl/scarf/sweater with you. That way, you can cover your knees and shoulders when necessary.
Q: Why does my kid 6 or under have to pay? C'mon!
A: Sorry about this. We're parents too and we understand! Unfortunately, they must be seated due to traffic regulations so they take up a seat in our vehicle. We even bring a car seat for children who require one. If it makes you feel any better, we don't make money off your kids for this tour.
Q: Why doesn't this tour run on Sundays?
A: Via Appia Antica, the road we travel on to access the Catacombs, is closed on Sundays.
Q: Will we see bones?
A: Yes! This tour visits the Church of Santa Maria della Concezione which houses a 17th-century ossuary under it. There you will see the bones of around 4,000 Capuchin friars!
Q: What Catacomb does this tour visit?
A: Usually the Catacombs of San Domitilla, although if there is any closure we will substitute the site with another catacomb site nearby.
Q: I have trouble walking? Is this tour for me?
A: If you have any doubts about your mobility, we strongly suggest you take a Catacombs Private Tour.
