St. Mark’s Basilica

One of the world’s most opulent churches, it has earned its nickname, The Church of Gold. Known for its long lines and incredible gilded interiors, St. Mark’s is a symbol of historical Venetian power. With similarities in architecture to the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, the Eastern influence of the Church is evident. Representing the trade connections as a world port, the Church is one of the most impressive in Italy. Learn about the Basilica’s history, see it’s grandeur and learn about the controversial acquisition of it’s relics.

Rialto Bridge

The oldest bridge in Venice, the original Rialto Bridge was built from broken gondolas in 1181. Rebuilt into its present stone edition in 1591 it connects the central Rialto neighborhood to Saint Mark’s. The wonderful bridge is normally overflowing with tourists, vendors and chaos but your guide will provide you with the bridge without the crowds.

Gondolas

It’s impossible to speak on Venice without talking about their famous boats. These wooden small vessels have been guiding Venetians through their hundreds of canals for centuries. Learn how these symbols of romance are built and why they are so popular.

Doge's Palace

Venice did not have kings and queens, for over 1,000 years the Venetian Republic was ruled by the Doge. Coming from the same latin root as Duke, the Doge ruled from the aptly named Doge’s Palace. This massive castle is located right next to St. Mark’s Basilica in St. Mark’s Square was the political and administrative capitol building of Venice from 1340 until 1797 when Napoleon took the city. The Palace though maybe most known for its use as a prison, especially its infamous cells “I Piombi” or “The leads” where prisoners including Casanova were kept. Casanova tells the tales of his stay and escape from the Doge’s Palace in his book Story of My Life.

Glass Blowing of Murano

A short boat ride from Venice are the seven small islands that make up Murano. Known for its famous glass making, the area has been creating glass marvels for centuries. Your guide will virtually bring you through the glass blowing experience and learn how the artisans of Murano stand apart from lesser glassmakers worldwide, creating the standard from Venice and beyond.

Venice

Most enjoyable and an interesting tour..

Enthusiastic and informative

I have visited Venice twice but learned a great deal from this webinar. Francesca is a most enthusiastic person (and who wouldn’t be about such a wonderful city) and I learned a lot. I have rated it 4 only because there was a lot of lost time at the start where we could see Francesca but couldn’t hear her and there did not seem to be any way in which the chair of our group could alert Francesca to the problem. Perhaps you ought to have a better process for flagging up this type of problem.

Charming and educational

Our virtual tour guide Federica was charming, polite, and full of information. She even taught us a few Italian words. The tour was fascinating, and made me immediately afterwards go look at trips to Venice. I hope to connect with this tour group and see what they can offer for 4 days of tours.
