Mesopotamia
Mesopotamia, also known as the Fertile Crescent, is widely considered to be on the birthplaces of civilization. As societies were formed art was able to develop and flourish. The Louvre has an impressive collection of artefacts from Mesopotamia spanning thousands of years. From the world’s earliest sculpture of a human to a king’s extravagant throne room depicting military conquests and deities – you will discover the foundations of sculpture that the Ancient Greeks and Romans would expand upon.
Ancient Greece and Rome
The Louvre’s collection of sculptures from classical antiquity is more than just the famous Venus de Milo. You will delve deeper into the collection and admire amazing life-like sculptures that most visitors just walk past. However, not everything is as it seems with these sculptures and there will be some surprises along the way from more modern restoration work to hidden details.
Italian Renaissance
Most visitors to the Louvre rush directly to the Grand Gallery to admire the extensive collection of Italian paintings and to fight their way up to the Mona Lisa. The Louvre is also home to some magnificent Italian Renaissance sculptures. From two unfinished sculptures by Michelangelo to an emotional depiction of true love, the Italian sculptures are a testament to just how much can be done with a piece of marble.
