Machu Picchu, One of the New 7 Wonders of the World

The purpose of Machu Picchu continues to capture the imagination of many today, it is considered an authentic archaeological enigma. Why did the Incas choose this site, hidden away in this rugged, and difficult-to-reach location? Why did it take until 1911 to be re-discovered? How did the discovery happen? And why was it named one of the new Seven Wonders of the World? Together we will explore what we know, the mysteries that still exist, and the site in all its current and historic natural splendor including some of the historic first images ever taken of the site. We will also cover the lush landscape that Machu Picchu is surrounded by, from over 300 species of orchids to the tourist favorite llamas.

Temple of the Sun

One of the most sacred sites inside Machu Picchu was the Temple of the Sun, a semi-circular construction built around a huge natural bedrock. You will learn all about how this temple was used by the Incas to worship the sun as something very special happens inside this construction on June 21 (winter solstice). Incredibly, the Incas had a lot of knowledge about the position of the sun, the moon, and the stars so they used Machu Picchu for a lot of astronomic observations. There is also a natural cave underneath the Temple of the Sun, and you will discover what evidence is indicating this was used for.

Temple of the Three Windows

Located in the main urban section of Machu Picchu, the Temple of the Three Windows is a large structure built in the typical Inca perfectionist construction that features 3 large windows orientated to the East. Here you will learn more about the Inca’s culture, symbolism, and philosophy as well as the completely different perspective the Incas had of the world and the Mother Earth (Pachamama) that seems to be lost today in the modern world.

Quarry

The Incas had knowledge of incredibly advanced construction and stonework techniques. You will be able to see just how impressive and organic their constructions were. It is almost like they were painting, but with rocks, as they followed the natural shapes and curves of the mountains and landscapes. When we visit virtually the Quarry area of Machu Picchu, you will learn more about how they cut the large white granite rocks, polished them, and carved them in the right shape to make constructions with stones that fit very tightly together without the use of mortar or clay. Some of the rocks weigh over 55 tons!
